One person dead after driver crashes into Florida Pride parade

One man is dead and another is seriously injured after a driver ploughed through a pride parade in South Florida.

Police investigate the scene where a pickup truck drove into a crowd of people at a Pride parade on June 19, 2021 in Wilton Manors, Florida.

"Both males were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where one was pronounced deceased", said Fort Lauderdale Police Department detective Ali Adamson at a Saturday night press conference. "To my knowledge, this was not an attack on the LGBTQ community", Justin Knight, president of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus, told The Daily Beast in a statement.

Police are keeping an open mind on the motive behind the incident last night while some witnesses said the crash appeared to be intentional.

The parade was canceled after the crash out of respect for the victims and to allow police to start a thorough investigation.

"This is a terrorist attack against the LGBT community", he said. He described how it all unfolded to WPLG Local 10 News.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried also tweeted about the incident saying at least two people were hit and in critical condition.

"It was deliberate, it was premeditated, and it was targeted against a specific person".

"This white pickup up truck dashed right through the crowd, barely missing Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz's auto by inches, and just dashed, cut through, smashed through a gate, smashed into a landscaping company, and he hit two people", Trantolis said.

In a statement, Rep. Schultz said she was "deeply shaken and devastated that a life was lost and others seriously injured at tonight's Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride Parade".

"As reports come in and more details unfold, we send love to our #LGBTQ family and all those impacted by the events that took place today at the #Pride event in #WiltonManors-including our #PFLAG chapter members", they tweeted.

Spectator Christina Currie told the South Florida SunSentinel that she was with her family at the start of the parade. While several eyewitnesses overheard the driver tell police it was an accident, one spectator told The Sun Sentinel 'it was definitely an intentional act right across the lanes of traffic'.
