A shooting at an outdoor birthday party on Saturday in Canada left three children and one adult wounded.

He later clarified that paramedics assessed five people at the scene but only four were transported to hospital.

"It's unconscionable. It's hard to believe", Taverner said.

The other victims included an 11-year-old boy, who police said was in serious condition after being struck in the buttocks, and a 23-year-old man who had suffered a leg wound and whose condition was unknown.

Taverner said a vehicle was seen speeding away from the scene.

"I've been a police officer a number of years and this is one of the most disturbing scenes, when you see young people like this indiscriminately shot".

Paramedics said one child suffered life-threatening injuries, while another was in serious condition and the third suffered minor injuries. "It's unbelievable this kind of thing is happening", Ron Taverner told reporters at the scene of the play.

"This is a tragedy", Skinner said.
