Peter Grant: 'Scotland must make statement against San Marino'

Let's hope that Oliver Burke, 21, David Bates, Scott McKenna and Oliver McBurnie, all 22, are not as psychologically damaged as the Tartan Army, who travelled almost 4,000 miles to see them.

Scotland's Euro 2020 qualifying campaign got off to the worst possible start with an embarrassing 3-0 Group I defeat at the hands of Kazakhstan in Nursultan on Thursday.

Scotland now face San Marino on Sunday and Grant has demanded the players show a reaction to one of the country's all-time worst results.

Grant told the Scottish National Team's Twitter account: "They have to make a statement".

"We have other players to come back, players with more experience who have to come back to the Scotland squad".

The 27-year-old Sheffield Wednesday defender played the full 90 minutes for Alex McLeish's team but it won't be a match he remembers fondly, losing to their world-ranked 117 hosts. We didn't do that well enough.

The six teams in Group I (Scotland, Kazakhstan, San Marino, Cyprus, Russia and world No. 1 Belgium) will square off in a home-and-away, double-round-robin format between now and November for a total of 10 qualifying games.

"It was awful. They hit us with two blockbusters", McLeish said. We said that would happen and that's exactly what they did. He was partly to blame for the second Kazakhstan goal, as he didn't track the runner. If you don't do the small details that we spoke about, it doesn't matter what level you are playing at, you can be punished, and that was proven'.

Kazakhstan then doubled their lead before ten minutes had passed, as Yan Vorogovsky got on the end of a defence splitting pass, poking the ball past Scott Bain. That was a massive problem we had in Israel, we played too slowly, we played back too often, we played square too often, and it happened again. And that's part of football, we can't all be Barcelona. Obviously we need to have as strong a squad as we can if we're going to be strong in qualification.
