Police believe Josephson entered a black Chevy Impala driven by Rowland that she may have mistaken as her Uber ride.

When she never returned home, loved ones began a frantic search, and eventually reported her missing to police.

"This was a bad scene", Chief Holbrook said.

A CCTV caught Samantha getting into a black Chevy Impala that she mistook for her Uber Ride. He was being held in the Richland County jail.

Columbia Police Department had previously released surveillance images released showing Josephson the student before she disappeared. When the officer asked the driver to get out the vehicle, he ran but was quickly captured, the chief said.

"I see that even in the short time that she was here, how many people she positively impacted with her energy", Corbishley said.

Holbrook said he spoke with Josephson's family prior to the press conference.

He said, "Our hearts are broken, they're broken".

"It was gut-wrenching. This is personal to us". Police also say they found containers of liquid bleach, germicidal wipes and window cleaner in the vehicle.

Early on Saturday morning, an officer spotted a vehicle matching the description of the auto two blocks from the tavern and initiated a traffic stop, Holbrook said. "It stays with you.' That positive energy is going to help me go on living the rest of my life".

If the information doesn't match up, do not get into the vehicle, the company wrote on a blog post.

When Samantha's actual Uber driver arrived moments later, the driver cancelled the ride when she didn't show up for the pick-up, witnesses said. "I sit here and cry while looking at the picture and write this", his post read.

Josephson was a 21-year-old political science major at the University of SC from Robbinsville, NJ and an aspiring lawyer.

"What we have learned is. you guys have to travel together at night", he said.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I write these words this morning", the president said in a statement released on the University's website.

According to the Facebook page of Josephson's father, the family lives in Robbinsville Township, New Jersey, about 10 miles east of Trenton, CNN affiliate WACH-TV reported.

USC was planning a Sunday evening vigil for Josephson on the field behind the school's main recreation center, according to WLTX-19 in SC.

"Our thoughts, prayers, boundless grief and endless support are with Seymour, Marci and Sydney at this unimaginable time", the message said.
