Osama Bin Laden's Son Dead, Say US Intelligence Officials

Obama bin Laden's son, Hamza, who was trying to lead an al-Qaida resurgence, has died, according to United States reports. It is unclear if the USA has confirmed his death.

It comes after NBC News reported the U.S. had received intelligence that he had died, citing three American officials.

The United States government under President Donald Trump had a role in the operation that killed Hamza bin Laden, though the details of that role are not clear at this time.

Hamza bin Laden had been seeking to stage attacks on western targets with the aim of restoring al-Qaida's status at the vanguard of extreme jihadist groups, after many years of decline and eclipse by the Islamic State. Hamza bid Laden appeared in al Qaeda propaganda videos.

Hamza bin Laden's last known public statement, released by al Qaeda in 2018, included threats against Saudi Arabia and called on the people of the Arabian peninsula to revolt against their rulers. That statement threatened Saudi Arabia. He was regarded as a potential successor to his father, who led the terror group when it attacked New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon. His brother, Khalid, was killed along with Osama bin Laden in the 2011 Navy Seal raid. Hamza was not found at the compound.

According to former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and counter terrorism expert Ali Soufan, Hamza was "being prepared for a leadership role in the organization his father founded," and would likely be looked on favorably by the "jihadi rank-and-file" were he to take on that role. Letters seized during the raid showed bin Laden was grooming his son to take over. He also said Hamza bin Laden was "perceived favorably by the jihadi rank-and-file" and could "reunify the global jihadi movement" after ISIS' power was weakened.

In February, a $1 million reward was offered by the State Department for information about his whereabouts. Hamza was also reportedly married to the daughter of a senior al-Qaeda leader, Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah, who operates under the alias Abu Muhammad al Masri.
