The ire from Harris supporters stemmed from the fact that Gabbard scored a hit on Harris when she accused the senator of a hypocritical stance on drug abuse as California's attorney general.

"People like Kamala Harris need to be held accountable for their record, not for something that she said or did 50 years ago". In more than two hours of verbal skirmish and granular policy details on issues such as health care and criminal justice reform, the ten candidates on stage (and ten others the night before) challenged each others' record, positions and prescriptions, even as polls - even on Trump's favored Fox News - showed Democratic frontrunners ahead of Trump at this point. For Harris, who's hoping to be the first black female president, Gabbard's was a painful blow. As party activists have moved ever further to the left - and are decidedly hostile to old white guys - the 76-year-old vice president to Barack "Fundamentally Transforming the United States of America" Obama is the only viable option for those who remain unwilling to jump on the Bernie Sanders/Elizabeth Warren Socialist Express, or to play the identity-politics game driving the candidacies of other Democrats.

Biden said highlighted the razor-thin margins in Trump's wins in those Midwest battleground states.

Mr Biden emphasised his work as vice president to help the vehicle industry and the city fix its bankrupt finances.

Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado saved most of his criticism for Trump, but said he anxious, too, that Trump would destroy Democrats if Harris's plan became the Democratic offer.

Last night, almost every one of the other contenders onstage went after Biden.

Biden, the frontrunner, fought back.

Biden said in response that "his plan doesn't make sense".

He ridiculed Harris's contention that her recently unveiled healthcare plan would not require a middle-class tax increase or the elimination of private insurance plans.

The Democratic debate participants argued whether decriminalizing illegal border crossing constitutes "open borders" in Detroit.

"People should have to get in line".

Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington was the most brutal in describing Trump on race: "we can not allow a white nationalist to be in the White House", Inslee said.

"We can no longer allow a white nationalist to be in the White House", said Washington Gov. Jay Inslee.
