From today, the social media giant will remove the number of reactions a post receives from public view for some users.

The goal of the test on the photo and video-sharing social networking, which Facebook acquired in 2012, was to remove the pressure on users of how many likes their posts receive. In the beginning, the test was limited to Canada but has since expanded to other places such as Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Japan and new Zealand. The tech company stated the technique will be a restricted test that will begin in Australia.

From Friday, some Australian users will no longer be able to see the number of likes - or reactions - on another person's Facebook post. The test is now active in Australia, and the company will decide whether to expand it to more regions depending on user reception, and, according to a Facebook spokesperson (via TechCrunch), the company "will gather feedback to understand whether this change will improve people's experiences".

Facebook is about to begin hiding like counts.

Garlick said the decision to remove likes from Instagram has had "positive feedback", which may be true when it comes to outside groups but not so much its top users, who almost universally slammed the decision.

The social media big didn't verify how lengthy the trial would run for.

For years, internet health advocates have pushed Facebook to stop prioritizing Like counts, arguing that the metrics have a negative impact on people's self-esteem. You could tap the emoji to see the detailed overview and count it up yourself, but who would really do that (I'm sure some people are vain enough).

Mia Garlick said the company had consulted mental health experts and anti-bullying groups over the change.

It's hoped the change will make people feel more comfortable sharing on the platform and not feel like they're in competition. Social media influencers have also racked up Likes - sometimes by purchasing them - and made money by promoting products to their followers.
