Weighing in at 1.68 pounds, Microsoft says that the Surface Pro X is also the thinnest Surface device yet at just 5.3mm.

These will include both Microsoft Surface and devices from several Windows ecosystem partners including ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo.

Perhaps, not wanting to undermine the anticipation and excitement of the Surface Pro X unveiling, the Surface Pro 7 was probably the most conservative announcement Microsoft held, with a handful of modest upgrades announced today.

The Surface Pro X will take up a spot on the top end of the Surface tablet lineup when it becomes available. The laptop starts at $999 for the 13.5 inch, and $1,199 for the 15 inch.

The Surface Pro X starts at $999.

Microsoft plans on having Windows 10 available in the fall of 2020 to be ready for the holiday season. In addition, Microsoft is also rumored to launch a new ARM-based Surface tablet along with a dual-screen Surface device.

Then there's another dual-screen device, effectively Microsoft's return to the smartphone market: it's called the Surface Duo, it has two displays hinged together a bit like the LG G8X ThinQ, and it runs Android rather than any variant of Windows. It is not a foldable OLED display like the Samsung Galaxy Fold but does offer the convenience of a dual-screen display.

The Redmond, Wash. -based company announced updated Surface devices including the Surface Pro 7 and Surface Laptop 3, as well. It's a pair of unusually shaped, slightly oversized wireless earbuds that can manage up to 24 hours of battery life thanks to a charging case. The ever-reliable Twitter tipster Evan Blass said in a tweet that Microsoft could unveil the dual-screen Centaurus product at the October 2 event.

But Microsoft referred to it as a "communication device" on stage, so we'll see if there are any surprises that disqualify it from being considered a proper phone. It is similar to the traditional keyboard except for a place to dock and charge your Surface Slim Pen. Only time will tell whether Microsoft was referring to Windows 10X or other future platforms. The Surface Duo is like a tinier version of the Neo, except it's also a phone. The 13.5-inch version runs a 10th-gen Intel Core processor; the 15-inch comes with an AMD Ryzen Surface Edition processor. Microsoft is also working closely with one-time mobile competitor Google to make this distinctive design play nicely with Android.

The Duo will run Android - presumably whatever comes after Android 10, which introduced support for foldable screens. Folks can grab the new Surface Pro for as little as $749 later this month.

With the Surface Neo still so far from release, Microsoft is cagey with specifications.
