The 49-year-old former footballer and his dance partner Nadiya Bychkova faced off against Mike Bushell and Katya Jones in the dance off after receiving the lowest number of votes from the public.

Bychkova revealed: "He's done so well".

James's exit leaves 11 couples remaining in the contest.

"Loved every chat we had, I learned so much from you".

Judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and guest judge Alfonso Ribeiro (standing in for Bruno Tonioli) all voted to save Mike and Katya, sending David and Nadiya home.

The professional dancer - who recently split from Katya Jones - insists there is nothing going on between him and the footballer, and his sole focus is just "Strictly Come Dancing" rather than finding love.

Nadiya said: 'From the first day he couldn't lift his elbows up or stand straight, now he's delivered an unbelievable jive.

He said: "Just a word to Will: I think I work hard, but, man, that guy puts a shift in".

Motis Mabuse echoed their opinions, with Shirley Ballas who said he would also have saved the same couple if his decisive vote were needed.

Saturday night's show saw James being urged to roar at the judging panel in a bid to unleash his emotions.

Neil told Hello! magazine: "In their rehearsals they kept going wrong and Mike kept missing steps so when they danced that quickstep and he nailed it from beginning to end, that was her letting go and going, 'Wow, you did it.' We all felt it".

James said: "Oh I've loved it".

"Nadiya's dedication and how much this meant to her as well meant more to me", he said. "Thank you for everything", she said.

YouTube blogger Saffron Barker and professional partner AJ Pritchard were top of the Leader Board with a score of 38 out of 40 for their Foxtrot to Frank Sinatra's New York, New York.

Strictly Come Dancing will return on Saturday 26th October at 6.35 pm on BBC One, with the Results Show on Sunday 27th October at 7.15 pm on BBC One.

Strictly continues on BBC One.
