New Map Of India Shows Union Territories Of Jammu And Kashmir, Ladakh

"Jammu and Kashmir" is a disputed territory with Pakistan, while "Ladakh" is disputed with China and includes Chinese territories in its administrative division.

The Ladakh UT consists of two districts - Kargil and Leh - while the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory comprises 20 districts.

Earlier, this morning, former defence secretary R K Mathur was sworn-in Leh as the first Lt Governor of Union Territory of Ladakh.

"This is bad and void, and this is not effective in any way and will not change the fact that the area is under China's actual control". Home minister Amit Shah in his address said that the reorganisation was necessitated by the constant threats of cross-border terrorism in J&K and the demand of the people of Ladakh. Since the sixth or seventh century, Ladakh, to which Buddhism traveled from central India via Tibet, has been variably held by Tibet, India and China.

"China deplores and firmly opposes this", Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said during a press conference on Thursday.

Its ally China, which is locked in a separate decades-old dispute with India over the part of Kashmir called Ladakh, also slammed India for unilaterally changing its status.

During the month, 57 people were critically injured due to the firing of bullets, pellets and teargas shells on peaceful demonstrators by Indian military, paramilitary and police personnel in the occupied territory. Pakistan has been routinely criticised by India for fuelling separatism and supporting militants.

Raina will also be paid a counsel fee of Rs 50,000 per effective hearing and Rs 5,000 per non-effective hearing for appearance in cases before Supreme Court, Delhi HC and other courts and tribunals outside the Union Territory.

India is expecting that by opening up land rights in Kashmir to individuals from outside the area it could reignite economic development, create jobs and turn the attention away in the militancy where over 40,000 individuals have died.

Modi says an end to an anti-India insurgency would boost tourism in Kashmir, known for its stunning mountain vistas, and encourage outside investment that would improve its economy.

Local authorities in Kashmir, meanwhile, deployed tens of thousands of government forces and issued a high alert for rebel attacks and anti-India protests. However the major issues of the acceptance lies with our neighbour Pakistan.

Kashmir has been split between India and Pakistan since 1947 and has sparked two wars and numerous flare-ups between the two nuclear-armed foes, most recently in February when they conducted tit-for-tat air strikes.

"The relationship between India and the United States is an important strategic partnership and one that we need to constantly work at... to keep it at levels that are desirable", Mr. Shringla told The Hindu on Thursday.
