As longtime sports broadcaster and dilapidated Bruins coach Don Cherry continues to face backlash for controversial comments he made on his Coach's Corner segment, some supporters are coming to his defense.

Cherry was sacked by Sportsnet on Monday after making an anti-immigrant rant during Saturday's broadcast, then refusing to apologize.

Cherry was the Bruins head coach for Orr's final two seasons in Boston (1974-75, 1975-76).

The 85-year-old admitted he should have chosen his language more carefully. "These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada".

Cherry has worked as a broadcaster for almost 40 years following a career as an National Hockey League player and head coach.

And he's sticking by his buddy, nicknamed Grapes, which is admirable.

"He got fired on Remembrance Day". Cherry expressed disappointment in his friend for that apology, but refused to "throw him under the bus".

"I love Don Cherry". "I was gonna put out a tweet, or whatever they do, saying I was wrong and I think it could have smoothed over pretty good". We know Hamilton fans would make the trip, and Eskimo fans, after missing the playoffs in 2018, would be more than eager to make the short trip to Cowtown. He was saying we should buy a poppy.

If you were a hockey fan, you knew this about him and took things with a grain of salt, but he was always entertaining as he bantered with McLean about their given topic.

"Yes, he's my friend". However I've recognized him a very long time and I do know he isn't a bigot or a racist.

"Don is one most generous people I know". "He's a big reason why most of us play hockey".

"I think he's meant a lot to the game and provided a lot", said Leafs captain John Tavares. "What they've completed to him up there would possibly be disgraceful".

Honestly, I'm OK with Hockey Night in Canada moving on and going in a new direction. "The freedom of speech doesn't matter". On Thursday, Orr talked to WEEI about Cherry's dismissal. "He is getting some wonderful support".

Cherry, you may remember, was sacked Monday by Sportsnet due to a racist rant he made against immigrants on "Hockey Night in Canada" over the weekend, according to Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun.

Sportsnet released a statement on Sunday morning, saying Cherry's comments were "offensive". Receive comprehensive coverage of your teams and stream the Celtics easily on your device.
