Jimmy Lake contract details at Washington revealed

Chris Petersen's resignation is shocking for the UW Huskies. If Lake were to leave for another coaching job in college or professional football on or before January 31, 2022, he would owe Washington $6 million.

Eastern Washington's Mike Kramer, who was most recently the head coach at Idaho State, didn't have to go far to recruit the talented defensive back, although he was hardly on the Eagles' radar until a friend pointed Kramer in Lake's direction.

Washington has already named defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake as his successor.

Petersen was finally persuaded to leave Boise State in 2013 after growing the Broncos into a national powerhouse. His Huskies just beat Washington State 31-13 Friday at Husky Stadium, the seventh consecutive Apple Cup win for UW.

"It has been a privilege and a professional dream fulfilled to be part of this world-class institution", Petersen said in the team's release.

Petersen, 55, is one of the most-accomplished and most-successful head coaches in the country.

"The football program and the Husky Athletics in general will continue to thrive, and will do so in the right way, with Jen Cohen's leadership and the University administration's commitment to excellence".

Petersen went 8-6 and 7-6 in his first two years in Seattle before a span of three straight double-digit win seasons, including the Pac-12 championship in 2016 and 2018. Petersen will transition into a leadership advisory role within the athletic department, according to the news release.

As a Huskies fan, I can't wait to see what Lake will do as the head coach and I'm intrigued at how the offense might change with Petersen no longer on the sidelines.

Lake is about to turn 43, worked with Petersen at Boise State for a few years, worked as the defensive backs coach, and worked his way up into the defensive coordinator spot at Washington. "I can't thank him sufficient for his service and management, and I look ahead to having him keep on workers in a management advisory position, so he can proceed to affect people throughout our division and the complete campus". I had personally thought Lake was going to be groomed to take over as the next Seahawk coach; he's that good. It beat Southern Miss in the 2015 Heart of Dallas, but lost to Alabama in the CFP, dropped the 2017 Fiesta to Penn State, and lost the Rose Bowl against Ohio State. Kwiatkowski was MSU's defensive coordinator from 2000-05.

The victor will be announced December 10 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Charlie Strong was sacked Sunday, two days after finishing a 4-8 season with a lopsided loss to intrastate rival UCF. The quarterback says he believed it was in his best interest to "transfer to play my final year of eligibility".
