Arsenal eyeing Flamengo defender Mari

The 26-year-old, the first Spaniard to ever win the Libertadores, came to London for medical treatment this weekend. Sky Sports reports that the Gunners are involved in talks with the Brazilian side.

Mari was spotted arriving at Heathrow Airport with Arsenal technical director Edu on Saturday afternoon and when asked by Goal journalist Charles Watts if he was excited to join Arsenal, the defender confirmed the move by saying "yeah, of course".

He borrowed for three successive seasons from Girona, NAC and Deportivo La Coruña, before joining Flamengo in a permanent agreement last summer.

Pablo Mari had been on Manchester City's books before signing for Flamengo, suggesting he's not bound by any work permit hurdles.

Mikel Arteta has given his arsenal a warlike character, which is evident in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea after sinking to 10 men. Mari is expected to begin pre-season training with his Flamengo teammates on Monday.

He also featured when Flamengo lost the Club World Cup final against Liverpool 1-0 after extra time.

Mikel Arteta has been on the look out for defensive reinforcements this month after Calum Chambers was ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury while Shkodran Mustafi has been linked with a move away from the club following a string of error-prone performances. "It's true that at the back we've been short but there are other positions".

Arteta believes he has Arsenal heading in the right direction after reaching the end of his first month at the helm, with his message getting across despite picking up just two wins from seven games in all competitions.

At the moment, I am 50:50 [over signing anyone] because this transfer window is very, very complicated.
