In 2018 Saunders was fined £100,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control for posting a video in which he tells a woman he will give her £150 worth of drugs to perform a sex act.

"I am a God fearing man and I do not condone domestic violence under any circumstances", Saunders stated.

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) said in a statement that Saunders' licence would be suspended until a hearing could be arranged under its misconduct regulations. I spoke to his management team. It was so idiotic, it was so frustrating because I know Billy well. He does a lot for the community, he does a lot for charity, but every now and again he does the most stupid things.

"It's always with Billy". It's one step forward, four steps back with Billy Joe Saunders and it is frustrating. Sometimes you can have a conversation with him and say 'Bill, what are you doing?' And sometimes that can make it worse.

"You're selling your body on the street. what are you doing that for?"

Matchroom Boxing USA president Eddie Hearn called Saunders' video "idiotic" and "unacceptable" while speaking with TalkSport on Monday.

"I can only tell you he does have a good heart, he didn't mean anything in the video, but you just can't do it, especially when you're in his position".

"Thinking you're having a laugh, or not having a laugh, young people are watching that video".

The video emerged as home secretary Priti Patel promised that domestic abuse victims who are isolated with their abusers during the lockdown "will not be forgotten". "You can not do it, it's unacceptable".

"It did not cross my mind about the actual reality of domestic violence and its suffers and the second I realised it could cause any upset I quickly took the video down but unfortunately the way social media works, it spread like wildfire".

"It wasn't meant to be suggesting "go and hit your wife and your loved ones". I am a very straight, honest person, I don't beat around the bush.

Saunders last fought in November where he beat Argentina's Marcelo Esteban Coceres with a somewhat labored 11th round TKO and had been in the reckoning for a highly-lucrative fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez before the Mexican fighter's representatives opted to pursue a trilogy bout with Gennady Golovkin.
