WTOP reported the Governor of Maryland, Larry Hogan, opened a news conference this evening confirming the tragic outcome.

"Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend's daughter, Maeve, and her 8-year-old grandson Gideon went missing after canoeing yesterday afternoon on the south river here in Anne Arundel". "They just got farther out than they could handle and couldn't get back in", he said.

Hogan said he spoke Friday morning with Kennedy Townsend, the former Maryland lieutenant governor and daughter of Robert F. Kennedy.

A Maryland Department of Natural Resources statement said a preliminary investigation "revealed that the pair may have been paddling the canoe from a residence in Shady Side, MD out into the bay to retrieve a ball and were unable to paddle back to shore".

The Kennedys are reportedly gathered at a waterfront house and children were playing with a ball in the yard Thursday afternoon when it was kicked into the bay.

Officials said the conditions were windy at the time.

A concerned citizen called 911 at about 4:30 p.m. from the Columbia Beach community pier in Shady Side, after seeing the two struggling and drifting in the bay with their canoe or kayak.

Ms McKean's grandfather Robert F Kennedy, the former U.S. attorney general, was assassinated while running for the White House in 1968, five years after the murder of his brother, president John F Kennedy. Firefighters confirmed that two people in a small vessel were drifting several miles south from the pier in Chesapeake Bay.

A search was carried out on Thursday night, resuming on Friday, by helicopters and boats.

Past year another of Robert Kennedy's granddaughters, Saoirse Kennedy Hill, died from an apparent overdose aged just 22.

John F. Kennedy Jr., only three-years-old when his father was killed, later died in a plane crash in 1999.

Saoirse Kennedy Hill, right, granddaughter of Ethel Kennedy and her late husband Robert F. Kennedy, holds a relative's baby before a ceremony for naming the Robert Kennedy Navy Ship at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, in Boston on September 20, 2016.
