U.S. reports highest single-day coronavirus death toll since outbreak

The United States set a disturbing global record on Saturday with the number of deaths from coronavirus leaping by 1,497 in just one day taking the death toll past 8,500.

The number of people infected in the US has exceeded 300,000, with the death toll climbing past 8,400; more than 3,500 of those deaths are in the state of NY.

Adams tells "Fox News Sunday" that, "this is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment, our 9/11 moment".

President Trump has recommended that Americans continue to follow social distancing guidelines, but nine states have yet to issue stay-at-home orders.

The warning comes after President Donald Trump said "there will be a lot of death" on Saturday, as the us faces its "toughest week" in the fight against the pandemic.

"I will not say we have it under control", Fauci told CBS on Sunday.

"The governors are intensely protective of their right, and rightly so, to be able to decide what's best for their states", he said. "We want a month but at least give us a week or two if you can ... whatever you can give us to get to this peak and start to come down the other side".

Even if you are young or otherwise healthy, it is critical that you work from home; avoid social gatherings of more than 10 people; avoid eating or drinking in public eateries and use drive-thru or delivery options instead; avoid discretionary travel, shopping trips and social visits; do not visit nursing homes or long-term care facilities unless to provide critical assistance; practice good hygiene by washing hands and avoid touching your face.

"This will be probably the toughest week between this week and next week, and there will be a lot of death, unfortunately, but a lot less death than if this wasn't done but there will be death", Trump said. NY state leads the nation in cases, although the death rate may actually be higher in New Orleans, according to some experts.

"We've seen that in Italy", Fauci said. Nine governors have resisted such a move, prompting many to call for Trump to issue an order for people to stay home across the USA.

The US death toll was creeping toward the grim milestone of 10,000 as the pandemic's epicenter in NY racked up hundreds of lives lost a day and hospitals girded for an influx of new infected patients. Adams was asked on NBC's "Meet the Press" if they should join the rest of the country.

Adams also has a message to governors who haven't yet imposed shelter-in-place orders in their states.

Adams said governors resisting a stay-at-home order can help if they are willing to "give us what you can" in terms of asking people to stay home.
