GM Thomas Dimitroff: Falcons 'very comfortable' with health of RB Todd Gurley

Rams head coach Sean McVay praised Gurley for his contributions to the franchise and said he thinks he'll do a good job for the Atlanta Falcons, who announced yesterday that they had agreed to terms with Gurley.

After closing the book on the Todd Gurley era last month, the Los Angeles Rams continue to evaluate their options when it comes to figuring out how to create the most effective backfield in 2020.

"In the draft, that will be something that that we'll look at", McVay said in a video conference with local media Monday morning. "So the more availability he has for us, I think we look forward to it because he's a special athlete and somebody who can really help us". However, they also will have $5.5 million in cap savings on June 2. The Rams cut Gurley with a post-June 1 designation, which means they will spread the dead-money cap charges of $11.75 million over two seasons.

McVay offered little insight into the decision to move on from Gurley, although he did hint that it had to do with the bigger picture.

"We have language in our contracts that are going to protect us and a player".

"In this case, I don't think it's a salary cap issue, but in the puzzle, like I said, in putting together your short-term and long-term vision of trying to consistently contend what you pay players comes into play [sic], obviously producing comes into play", he said, according to ESPN. His opportunities were limited as a rookie in 2019, carrying it just 39 times for 147 yards, but his role will grow exponentially next season. He suffered a knee injury the following year that resulted in a troubled season.

"We certainly don't replace the production, the way that he's influenced and affected the game", McVay said.

An eight-year pro, Brockers signed a three-year, $24 million contract.
