Assassin's Creed reveal is happening right now

The publisher unveiled the game's new Scandinavian setting during a livestream with Aussie artist Kode Abdo, a.k.a. BossLogic, on Wednesday.

Check out the Assassin's Creed live stream here. And as the rumor mill has suggested for what feels like years now, the next Assassin's Creed game is indeed about Vikings. At one point it was also rumored that the game will be set in Ancient Rome. Vikings are synonymous with sailing and seaside raids - just ask the destroyed castle in the stream art - so this would be the flawless opportunity for the series to return to the deep sea with a focus on naval combat.

The live stream doesn't appear to show actual game development or combat, but rather is a detailed look into the process creating the art behind the game. While Assassin's Creed has been an annualized franchise for much of its history, this would mark the second time over the past three releases in which there was a two year gap between major entries in the series. While some of the aesthetics are definitely similar, it remains to be seen how the new "Assassin's Creed" title differentiates itself in gameplay and overall open-world exploration.

Judging by the final image, we know that naval warfare will likely be a feature. No platforms have been announced either, but due to how tight-lipped Ubisoft has been on the game, it's nearly certainly going to be on next-generation consoles.
