LA to Offer Free Coronavirus Testing to All Residents: Mayor

Los Angeles has become the first major city in the U.S.to offer free coronavirus testing to anyone who wants it, even if they don't have symptoms of the disease. Up to now, testing has been available only to essential front-line workers such as health care professionals and grocery employees, and those displaying COVID-19 symptoms. He said he's confident the city will have the capacity to test everyone.

Garcetti said the city and county are increasing testing availability and educational outreach on COVID-19, including testing more than 600 homeless people living on Skid Row.

"We think that this is the best approach moving forward", Ghaly said.

The city has 34 testing sites with the capacity to test 18,000 people per day, far more tests than are now being conducted in the region, the mayor explained.

Testing is by appointment only and is being provided by the city in partnership with Los Angeles County and Community Organized Relief Effort.

"We have the capacity so don't wait, don't wander and don't risk infecting others", Mayor Eric Garcetti said in yesterday's news conference.

Business World reported that as of Wednesday (April 29), the L.A. County reported 1,541 new cases of coronavirus-positive individuals, making the total to 22,485 which is a seven per cent increase since the day prior.

Back in March, US President Donald Trump promised that "anybody that wants a test can get a test".

Los Angeles County officials reported 1,541 new cases of the coronavirus Wednesday, the largest increase of infections reported in a single day since the outbreak began, according to the Los Angeles Times.

About 1 million antibody tests are coming to the Los Angeles area, Garcetti said, but those tests don't show whether someone is now infectious. Folks can sign up here for same-day testing, or they can schedule to be tested the following day.

And I know that to that to get that referral, one must be presenting with COVID-19 symptoms-which we were not.
