SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't already watched the first two movies in the Star Wars sequel trilogy - The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi - then some serious spoilers lurk below.

After rumors began circling earlier this year that the Jojo Rabbit Oscar-winning filmmaker was being eyed to helm a new Star Wars film, it's been announced that Taika Waititi is officially set to co-write and direct a new feature for the hit sci-fi adventure franchise!

Krysty Wilson-Cairns, co-writer of Oscar-nominated movie "1917", will write the new "Star Wars" film with Waititi.

"Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" arrives on Disney Plus for Star Wars Day today (May 4), putting all nine films from the Skywalker saga in one place for fans and yes, there is a trailer. No further details or timeline have been announced at this time.

Waititi, who also directed Thor: Ragnarok, is no stranger to a galaxy far, far away and recently directed the final episode of the first series of The Mandalorian on streaming service Disney+.

It was also announced that Russian Doll showrunner Leslye Headland is developing a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney+. Release dates for both Waititi's and Headlan's projects have not yet been announced.
