Donald Trump has announced that the U.S. is set to wind down its Covid-19 task force.

Meanwhile, the White House is discussing disbanding the president's coronavirus task force as soon as Memorial Day, which is May 25.

While describing the need to focus on safeguarding lives and the economy, Trump was quoted as saying by PTI, "We will have something in a different form".

The decision frees up about 60 per cent of the $8 billion in funds earmarked for Native tribes in the CARES Act, after delays caused by a legal dispute among the nation's native populations over who is entitled to the aid. This data is not reflective of any of the modeling done by the task force, or data that the task force has analyzed.

He added that the move was a "true American tragedy" and argued that thousands would die as a result of "Trump's contempt for science".

Donald Trump is phasing out the coronavirus task force amid the pandemic.

Trump won Arizona in the 2016 election against Democratic presidential nominee and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but opinion polls show him now trailing the presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee, former Vice President Joe Biden, in the Southwestern state.

The press secretary says the study assumes "zero mitigation, meaning it was conducted as though no federal guidelines were in place, no contact tracing, no expansion of testing, while removing all shelter-in-place protocols laid out in the phased approach of the Opening Up America Again guidelines for individuals with co-morbidities".

Pence portrayed the task force as having accomplished its goal, as the USA outbreak - the largest in the world - plateaus. "No, no, mission accomplished, it's when it's over", he replied. And frankly, the Democrats should be ashamed, because they don't want us to succeed.

Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) tweeted: "Americans are suffering during this pandemic, but it can also get much worse without real leadership".

The task force was set up on 29 January.

Social distancing measures have slowed the spread of the virus, but health experts are concerned that the rush to reopen businesses could further extend the rate of deaths into the summer.

White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany insisted that Trump will continue to be briefed by the medical teams, even if there is no formal crisis group.

On Tuesday, General Mark Milley, the top US general, said it was still not known whether the coronavirus emerged from a wet market in China, the institute of virology or some other location - echoing remarks Mr. Pompeo made last Thursday. "The mission accomplished is when it's over".

It also projected that confirmed infections could rise by 700 percent to around 200,000 a day by the end of May.

As of Tuesday, more than 70,000 people in the U.S. had died and over 1.2 million are infected by COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, according to data being compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

The Baltimore-based university said as of 8:30 pm (4.30am UAE, Wednesday) that the country had suffered a total of 71,022 deaths.
