Apple to open a few retail stores in the USA next week

Apple's 270 USA retail stores have been closed since early April due to the coronavirus pandemic. But that's about to change.

Even as stores closed down due to the Coronavirus, Apple reported increased revenue from retail due to growth in online sales at its Q2 earnings call.

Apple had closed all of its stores outside China in mid-March "until further notice". Soon after, Apple extended that closure indefinitely as the global outbreak worsened.

Apple has more than 500 retail stores worldwide.

Apple reopening retail stores in a handful of states is somewhat encouraging, but doesn't necessarily imply additional stores will open in the near future.

"With many working and learning from home, our primary focus will be providing service and support", Apple said. It's China-based store was the quickest to reopen during the pandemic when China's case was declining.

As with the Apple Stores that have reopened in South Korea, Australia and Austria, the US locations will provide several safety measures. Those stores are set to open next week, according to an Apple statement. Its Boise, Idaho location will open Monday, with others to follow later in the week.

Will any Apple stores open up after that?

Apple said that its teams are constantly monitoring local heath data and government guidance.

Will re-opened Apple stores operate differently?

Apple has released a series of initially six videos with specialists explaining everything from making videos more cinematic on the iPhone, to drawing playful portraits with iPad.

New protocols in Apple stores will include limiting the number of customers who can be inside, meaning probable delays for those who spontaneously stop by for technical help from a "Genius Bar". "We recommend, where possible, customers buy online for contactless delivery or in-store pick up", the company said. It will implement temperature checks at reopened stores, limit the number of people in a store at once, and require face coverings, the spokesperson said.
