Takeover of long-term care homes long overdue: Horwath

"As we plan for gradual reopening, today the chief medical officer of health will expand #COVID19 testing guidelines so that anyone with symptoms can be tested", Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted.

The announcement of the glitch comes just a day after the provincial government outlined Stage 1 of restarting the economy that saw numerous businesses and workplaces allowed to reopen in the coming days.

The number of new cases is the lowest since late March. Not that I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow it went up again. Of those, 16,204 (75 per cent) are reported recovered, and 1,798 people have died (8.4 per cent).

It also suggests that fatalities may finally be trending downwards after a grim few weeks.

Among those patients are 144 who require a ventilator, the fewest since the province saw 140 on both May 10 and April 3.

Six new cases were also recorded, for a total of 366, with most of the cases concentrated in Gatineau.

The gap can be explained by a delay in the reporting of data.

According to a Toronto Star report, the risk of contracting and dying from COVID-19 in a long-term care outbreak is four times higher in for-profit homes compared to municipally run public homes and double compared to non-profit homes.

The province says 1,026 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 184 being treated in intensive care units. There are now outbreaks in 26 long-term care homes, retirement residences, and hospitals, and 553 residents in these facilities have tested positive for the virus. There are 1,672 staff members diagnosed with COVID-19, while among residents there are 2,690 infected and 1,269 who have passed away.

A total of 18,354 tests were conducted by the province on Thursday, up from 17,429 on Wednesday. Those outbreaks have included 316 cases among patients and 336 cases among staff.

5,251 people are 20 to 39 (24 per cent). This is up 17,429 from the previous day.
