Walsh said at the time that there was no thought of excluding the tens of thousands of amateur runners who consider running Boston a bucket list achievement.

"Our top priority continues to be safeguarding the health of the community, as well as our staff, participants, volunteers, spectators, and supporters", said Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) CEO Tom Grilk.

The Boston Athletic Association will instead hold the race virtually.

"While we can not bring the world to Boston in September, we plan to bring Boston to the world for a historic 124th Boston Marathon", said Tom Grilk, the CEO of the Boston Athletic Association.

Rescheduled from Patriots Day on April 20 to September 14, one of the world's most popular 26.2-mile races was cancelled on Thursday and will take place as a virtual event.

The 42.2km race usually draws more than 30,000 runners from all over the world.

Virtual offerings for participants during that week will include exclusive panel discussions, champions interviews, and a downloadable Boston Marathon toolkit that includes signature race elements such as a printable finish line, winner's breaktape, and more.

"There is a pretty rich history of accommodation and addressing reality".

"The spirit of Boston and the spirit of the Boston Marathon is to be strong and to be smart. When necessity drives you in a direction you might not have liked, you need to have the strength, the wisdom and the guidance from public officials to do what's right".

The race initially was scheduled for Monday, April 20, which was Patriots' Day in MA. Traditionally, the Red Sox have scheduled their first pitch for that morning so baseball fans could wander over to Kenmore Square after the game to see the runners pass by with one mile to go.

In March, when the race was postponed to 14 September, Mayor Marty Walsh cited the desire to salvage the estimated $211m pumped into the city's economy each year.

Participants in the virtual marathon will be required to complete a continuous marathon within a six-hour time period any time between September 7 and 14.

All participants originally registered for the April 20 event will be offered a refund of their entry fee and and will be able to use their qualifying time for 2021 Boston Marathon registration. The 125th anniversary edition is scheduled for April 18, 2022.
