Sonic the Hedgehog Movie is Officially Getting a Sequel

Paramount Pictures, in association with Sega Sammy, has confirmed that a sequel to this year's big screen adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog is now in pre-production stages at the studio. Jeff Fowler will return to direct from a screenplay by original scribes Pat Casey and Josh Miller.

Sonic the Hedgehog is available now on digital and Blu-Ray.

The decisions have not been made yet regarding casting or a production start date, as the movie is still in the development stage. Executive Producers will again be Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi, and Tim Miller. However, both James Marsden (who played Sonic's sidekick Tom Wachowski) and Jim Carrey (starring as villain Dr Robotnik) have previously expressed interest in reprising their roles. Tika Sumpter also co-stars with Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

Upon its release, "Sonic the Hedgehog" scored the No. 1 opening weekend of all time for a movie based on a video game, and boasted the fourth-best Presidents Day weekend debut. The film did not release in China or Japan due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the film's performance there was expected to push global grosses past at least $400 million.
