The Academy - seen as the apex body of the Hollywood film industry - had already eased some eligibility rules in April, allowing movies that skip the big screen and appear on streaming platforms to contend for Oscars this year.

Like a good Hollywood mystery, it's still unclear how - or even if - the Academy Awards can happen next year.

The organization recently extended its eligibility rules for the 2021 Oscars and awards season.

At the same time, the group announced that it was also pushing back the scheduled opening of its long-delayed Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, previously set for December 14, to April 30.

January 15, 2021 is the new deadline for 'general entry categories, ' such as best picture. The Oscars has been delayed three times before - due to LA flooding in 1938; following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.in 1968; and after the attempted assassination of Pres. Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Among other changes agreed at last week's governor meeting, the Best Picture category will have a mandatory 10 nominees from next year. The new members' inclusion has tilted the scales of membership toward more diversity, though women still make up just under half of members, and people of color just 12 of 54 members. The news comes after the Academy added director Ava DuVernay and producer Lynette Howell Taylor to their board of governors. "With that in mind, we will change - and keep on looking at - our principles and methods to guarantee that all voices are heard and celebrated". Other films now in production, meanwhile, have been delayed for the time being.

The BAFTAs are traditionally two weeks before the Oscars, making today's move expected after the Motion Picture Academy's shift to its latest Oscar date in the award's history.
