AG Barr: Trump has fired SDNY federal prosecutor who refused to leave

The powerful US attorney in Manhattan who has been overseeing investigations of President Donald Trump's allies showed up at his office to work Saturday, defying the attorney general who abruptly acted hours earlier to oust the prosecutor. We know SDNY has investigated President Donald Trump's conduct and allies in the past, including Michael Cohen and Rudy Giuliani.

Mr. Trump's purge of officials has intensified in the months since the Republican-led Senate acquitted him in the impeachment trial.

"Finally, I thank Geoffrey Berman, who is stepping down after two-and-a-half years of service as United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York", Barr said in a statement. He vowed to stay on the job until a Trump nominee is confirmed by the Senate.

In a surprise Friday night news dump, Barr announced - falsely - that Berman would be "stepping down" from his post.

Federal prosecutors in NY are investigating Giuliani's business dealings, including whether he failed to register as a foreign agent, according to people familiar with the probe.

"As chairman, I have honored that policy and will continue to do so", Graham said. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., said his committee was inviting Berman to testify this coming week.

Since being appointed in January 2018, Mr Berman has not shied from taking on figures in Mr Trump's orbit.

Geoffrey Berman oversaw the prosecution of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and probed advisor Rudy Giuliani's efforts to discredit the president's political opponents since he was appointed to head the powerful Southern District of NY attorney's office in 2018. The company has denied wrongdoing while resisting efforts by prosecutors to testify in a USA court.

They include President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen.

A royal source described the US Attorney's comments as another example of the official breaking his own confidentiality rules and that his actions were "frankly bewildering".

His statement came hours after Attorney General William Barr said Berman was stepping down from his position.

Mr Bharara, an outspoken critic of the president, said the timing of the push to replace his successor was odd.

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY is in a fight with the Justice Department over his job. Bharara wrote on Twitter, referring to the November 3 US presidential election.

Geoffrey Berman, the lawyer leading the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and who accused Prince Andrew of "shutting the door" on his probe, has insisted he has not resigned. Because of this, it was not immediately clear whether Barr could force Berman out. I have not resigned, and have no intention of resigning, my position ...

Preet Bharara, a CNN senior legal analyst who was sacked by Trump as U.S. attorney for the Southern District shortly after Trump took office in 2017, told CNN's Don Lemon that the late-night announcement was a "highly irregular thing to do ... when there are all sorts of investigations swirling around". Carpenito, Vladeck wrote on Twitter, is neither of those.

But the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel argued in a 1979 opinion that the "power to remove a court-appointed US attorney rests with the president".

Before Clayton joined the SEC, he was a lawyer in private practice at Sullivan & Cromwell, who specialized in public and private mergers and acquisitions.
