"I love this character, but persons of colour should play characters of colour", he tweeted on Friday.

Apu was played by a white actor, Hank Azaria, until he stepped away from the role in February.

Meanwhile, Mike Henry, the white actor who has voiced black character Cleveland Brown on FOX series' Family Guy (and spinoff The Cleveland Show), has announced he will no longer do the role.

White actors will no longer voice characters of colour in animated series The Simpsons and Family Guy.

The Simpsons producers announced that characters of colour like Apu will no longer be voiced by white people.

Over the three decades since the animated sitcom began, it has used white actors to play a number of non-white characters including Harry Shearer as Dr. Julius Hibbert and Hank Azaria as Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.

The Simpsons has been subject to heavy criticism over the last few years on this issue, most notably over Azaria playing the Indian character Apu, and this statement represents a substantial shift from the producers' historical stance on the matter.

There have been no other reactions yet from the show producers or cast members.

The show is one of Fox Network's most popular shows and syndicated in more than 100 countries.

Friday's announcement comes amid a widespread reckoning for U.S. pop culture about racism following mass protests this month over the killings of Black Americans by police that began following the death of George Floyd. "We all feel like it's the right thing", he said at the time.

Henry, who is white, has voiced the African-American Brown since the show's inception in 1999.

The Good Place star Kristen Bell also announced that she will no longer be portraying Molly, a mixed-race character in the Apple TV's new cartoon series Central Park, saying that doing so showed "a lack of awareness of my pervasive privilege".

Hank Azaria - who voices Apu - said earlier this year that he was stepping down from the role.
