Aretha Franklin musical biopic 'Respect' gets trailer

What you want in an Oscar contender, baby, Jennifer Hudson's got it.

The chosen actress is none other than Jennifer Hudson.

Jennifer Hudson is a ideal Aretha Franklin in the new trailer for the upcoming film, "Respect". That's in no small part to her biggest hit, "Respect", from which the upcoming biopic takes its name.

In addition to showing us the Oscar victor as Franklin, the trailer for the Liesl Tommy-directed flick also gave us glimpses of some of its other stars.

The movie follows the rise of Franklin's career from a child singing in her father's church choir to her becoming an global superstar. Directed by Liesl Tommy, the film features an outstanding cast including Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Queen Latifah, and Mary J. Blige, and tells the story of how Aretha Franklin went from singing gospel in Detroit, Michigan to becoming one of the most beloved musical talents in history.

This project is separate from the one National Geographic season of "Genius" starring Cynthia Erivo as Franklin, set to debut sometime in late 2020. However, its premiere was pushed back due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and is now set to arrive this fall. It will then expand January 8, 2021 in theaters with a full-on wide release January 15, which is Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.
