Maharashtra: 6,368 fresh Covid-19 cases in state, 167 deaths

This is the first time since the pandemic hit India, the country has reported more than 19,000 fresh infections in a single day. The country has seen a surge of 3,57,783 infections from June 1 till date. With the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases with over 83,077 infections and 2,623 fatalities., the state now has 27,847 active cases.

"It was mentioned that presently eight states - Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Telangana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal - contribute 85.5 per cent of active caseload and 87 per cent of total deaths in India", it said in a statement.

With a record spike of almost 20,000 cases in a day, India's COVID-19 tally mounted to 5,28,859 on Sunday and the death toll rose to 16,095, while Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh announced a door-to-door survey joining several states and UTs which have opted for the exercise in their efforts to check the surge. Besides, one death of police personnel was also reported in the state, as per the Maharashtra Police.

Mumbai recorded 1,402 new positive cases on Saturday, reaching 74,252.

As part of the campaign, 15 close contacts of a COVID-19 patient will be compulsorily kept in institutional quarantine.

Global coronavirus cases now exceed 10 million and more than half a million people have died from the respiratory disease, according to Johns Hopkins University. While 14,215 patients have been discharged, 649 deaths have been recorded so far, it said. Delhi has now 417 containment zones. The coronavirus tally in Bengaluru stood at 3,314. The Indian Council for Medical Research didn't test people with COVID-19 symptoms without a recent travel history and a known contact that might have transmitted the virus to them, up until March 20. This includes 749 in the government sector and 287 private labs.
