However, it's worth noting that PES 2020 owners will still need to buy a standalone experience for access to this so-called update.

This means that fans shouldn't expect wholesale changes and innovative additions to gameplay, as it is likely to be more of an update of rosters, kits and some other bonuses, which have not yet been clarified.

The developer points to more realistic players models and animations, improved physics, and photo-realistic next-gen visuals as cornerstones of the franchise's ground-up rework.

We recognise that many of you are enthusiastic for new myClub and Master League content, and we are also excited to share that large updates are in the works for both of these modes.

This is because Konami are prioritising the next generation of consoles - PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X - ahead of a slated 2021 release for PES 2022.

In a statement over on the Konami website, the company said, "The sheer scale of everything we are aiming to achieve for our next-gen debut has made it necessary to pare back our efforts in other areas of development". A teaser trailer was also made public for the same featuring Argentine legend Lionel Messi in Barcelona jersey at Camp Nou. It will update PES 2020 and offer a new experience for PES players, however, it's not known when this will launch.

We don't have a release date for PES 2021 (or PES 2022), but testing for the next-gen version is said to start testing in mid-2021 with a release later that year. It's the 2021 PES, that'll be trying something new for the footie franchise. Epic's engine enters preview in early 2021, with a planned full release later in the year.

The next-gen PES will release sometime in the back end of 2021. The title will presumably be released for current and next-gen consoles due to the series' prior reliance on cross-gen support, much like EA's Federation Internationale de Football Association series.
