Seattle's new National Hockey League team just revealed it's new name and look on Thursday. officially going with the legendary sea monster.

The franchise unveiled the new logo and colours in front of dozens of construction workers at an under-construction Climate Pledge Arena, formerly Key Arena, the team's future home.

The NHL's 32nd team was unanimously approved in a vote in 2018 and will begin to play in 2021-22.

If the team can continue to build off of this immediate success and general manager Ron Francis turn it into tangible success on the ice, then fans of the Kraken could be in store for a very exciting franchise from day one. But at just under 200 kilometres to the north, the Canucks will be the Kraken's closest and natural rivals.

Earlier this summer, CEO Tod Leiweke told the Seattle Times newspaper the team had looked at several logo designs in previous months, while dealing with a tangled net of trademark restrictions.

The Seattle ownership group officially registered Totems, Emerald, Rainiers, Renegades, Sea Lions, Seals, Evergreens, Whales, Cougars, Eagles and Firebirds to a list of 13 potential names for the city's expansion team.

Kraken caused a social media storm the moment the franchise was awarded, with fans for and against the fictitious sea creature.

It's been almost 100 years since the collapse of the Seattle Metropolitans, the first US-based team to win a Stanley Cup in 1917.

Per their site, the S hides a "single tentacle" that "stealthily rises from below, symbolizing the deep, dark waters of Puget Sound".
