"Initial reports indicate the victim may have been carrying a rifle, and approached suspect vehicle", she said.

In an interview with ABC's Good Morning America, Sheila Foster identified the man who was shot as her son, Garrett Foster.

A friend of the victim explains to the camera frantically that Foster is the fiance and caretaker of Whitney Mitchell, a quadriplegic in a wheelchair, and the couple has been protesting on the streets for over 50 days now. Police have arrested a suspect. Cops say he's cooperating. Reports claim he approached a vehicle during the gunfire. I was no more [than] ten feet from the shooter and running towards his auto. As a result of the shots, a man named Garrett Foster was hit.

A witness at the scene named Julian told KUT's Mose Buchele the vehicle nearly hit the group of protesters before the shooting.

Later that night, Mr Foster was fatally shot, but not by police.

The driver then stuck a gun out of the vehicle window and fired several shots, hitting the man with the rifle, before speeding away, according to Capochiano.

Foster, who did not fire his weapon, received first aid at the scene before being transported to Dell Seton Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead around 10:30pm Saturday night. There were no other deaths or people shot, according to the EMS department.

He said he wouldn't use the weapon against the police because he would die if he did so. He had a license to carry in Texas-we're an open carry state.

Foster's sudden death has been especially traumatizing for Mitchell, her mother, Patricia Kirven, told the Dallas Morning News.

Footage from the Black Lives Matter protest on Saturday, shared on social media, shows demonstrators running and screaming after several gunshots are fired, but it is not clear from the video where they are coming from.

Ratcliff did not take any questions and said it "was very early in an active investigation".

One man said the group was not part of Antifa, a far-left anarcho-communist group. "It's all about Black Lives Matter", he added later.
