First presidential debate moves to Cleveland after Notre Dame withdraws

The University of Notre Dame said on Monday it has pulled out as host of the first 2020 USA presidential debate on September 29 due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, so the event's location will be shifted to Cleveland.

Jenkins said he made the hard decision after consulting with Dr. Mark Fox, the St. Joseph County Deputy Health Officer, and with the unanimous support of the Executive Committee of the school's Board of Trustees. Late last month, the University of MI withdrew from hosting the second presidential debate, scheduled for October 15.

The decision marks the second time a presidential debate has been moved this election cycle because of the pandemic.

The University of MI was scheduled to host the second presidential debate but withdrew last month.

In addition to Case Western Reserve University, the September debate will be co-hosted by the Cleveland Clinic, which serves as a Health Security Advisor to the Commission on Presidential Debates.

He said Monday that the school would withdraw as host of the debate, saying the burdensome health precautions needed amid the pandemic would interfere with student education. "To have the presidential candidates discuss these issues in our innovative learning space represents a tremendous opportunity for both institutions - and our entire region".

The partnership with the Cleveland clinic will make the COVID-19 related preparations easier according to Case Western.

Organizers said they had not decided whether a live audience would be permitted. The general election is November 3.

"We are all challenged with adapting to a "new normal" and safety is key as we all face this pandemic together", James Merlino, the chief clinical transformation officer at Cleveland Clinic and chief health security advisor to the Commission on Presidential Debates, said. Pared-back events in Charlotte, North Carolina, will still be held, Trump said.

Notre Dame has hosted six presidents at commencement ceremonies through the years - more than any university in the nation other than the military academies - but this would have been the University's first presidential debate.
