Wisconsin Republicans break with Trump on election delay

US President Donald Trump on Thursday raised the possibility of delaying the nation's November presidential election despite its date being enshrined in the country's constitution, drawing immediate objections from Democrats.

Trump, on Twitter on Thursday morning, alleged, without evidence, that mail-in balloting would be make the 2020 presidential balloting the "most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history".

Polls also suggest that many more voters are going to vote by mail in the 2020 election cycle amid the backdrop of a pandemic, meaning historic levels of postal voting is expected.

"It will be a great embarrassment to the United States of America", he wrote.

"The election will proceed as planned on November 3rd despite Trump's never ending efforts to undermine our democracy", Padilla said. "Date of the general election is set by federal law, fixed since 1845".

According to NBC News, a change in the election date means a change in the federal law and it would need to go through Democrats-controlled House of Representatives and the Republican-controlled Senate. Among them? Strict deadlines regarding the receipt of mail-in applications (and ballots) as well as signed forms from applicants acknowledging that any manipulation of the documents constitutes both election fraud and mail fraud.

This is not an idea anyone, especially the president, should float, said Ari Fleischer, who was a White House press secretary in the administration of President George W. Bush, a Republican. After drawing a false distinction between absentee voting and mail-in voting, the President suggested delaying the election instead of relying on mail-in voting. Mr Trump has given few specifics to back up the claim.

Those elections officials also expressed confidence that they would be able to effectively carry out expanded mail-in voting in November, despite Trump's repeated claims of rampant voter fraud.

And here we are at the end of July, and President Trump has indeed suggested what Biden said he feared.

"We aren't going to delay an election just because this impeached President's poll numbers are falling", said U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit.

"This is a unsafe proposal from the president that would put the foundation of our democracy at risk", Balter said in a statement.

Others on social media noted that the president has no authority to change the date of elections.

About half of USA states allow any registered voter to vote by post on request.

Barr also testified that to his knowledge, a sitting president can not contest the results of an election if the vote tallies are clear.

In a lawsuit filed in Pennsylvania, Trump's campaign and the Republican National Committee seek to ensure that all written ballots are delivered in person or by mail to county boards of elections, not collected at places such as shopping centers, retirement homes, college campuses and municipal government. What makes election officials confident that it is secure?

"Senator, I'm not going to enter a legal judgment on the fly this morning", replied Pompeo.

As DeSantis pointed out, Florida does not have universal vote-by-mail. "Mark my words: I think he is gonna try to kick back the election somehow, come up with some rationale why it can't be held", Biden said at a fundraiser in April.

Critics of postal voting argue that people could vote a couple of times via absentee ballots and in person.
