Half of the new deaths were connected to aged care homes in the city. Victoria's outbreaks since June have been partly linked to family gatherings after the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

After cases peaked on July 7 with 447 recorded, they have been gradually going down with just three recorded on July 28.

As of midnight on Sunday, August 2, every person in regional Victoria, as well as metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, will be required to wear a mask or a face covering when outside of their home.

Sweden, whose controversial softer approach to curbing coronavirus has received worldwide attention, said it would encourage people to keep working from home into next year where possible, as the country passed 80,000 recorded cases. This is roughly double the number of tests on most other days.

The Premier confirmed that the significant spike in cases was linked to aged care, but warned about workplaces as a significant site of transmission.

The 13 new deaths takes the state's death toll to 105.
